Impala
(print*)(digital projected image)
Camera: Olympus E3 handheld
f/3.3 1/250sec ISO 500 50-200ml lens at 169mm (338mm at 35ml equivalent)
We were staying at the luxury tented camp in Kgalagadi South Africa where the red sand
dunes cross borders over Botswana and Namibia. The Impala was standing in a small herd, grazing in a shaded area just off the road, his head towards us keeping an alert but confident lookout as we drove slowly by. The late afternoon sunlight coming through the Acacia trees perfectly lighting the scene.

This San Parks area in South Africa is one of the few that supports both Springbok and Impala. Impala males fight ferociously for the best territory (and the chance for females); this battle had been going for some time before we arrived, with prime territory on a flat river bed up for grabs.
This image captures the moment where with loud clashes of horn on horn, earth and stones flying, the dominant male (on the right) gained superiority; his foe went to his knees with an audible grunt as his tongue rolled out. The winner kept his rival pinned to the deck for some minutes before seeing him off with a fierce running jab. Early morning sun provided fine rim lighting shining through the dust cloud.

A meandering sand road diversion within the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park took us further into the bush than normal, this early morning trip chancing us upon a Meerkat burrow with the family group still emerging, this pair mirrored each other as they stood soaking up the sunshine to warm their small bodies while keeping an ever watchful eye out for predators. Brilliant little creatures, they were a pleasure to watch and photograph from our 4x4 rental vehicle.

Bovine TB is one of the great killers of the predatory cats, contracted from their prey the African Buffalo. As the dry Kalahari area does not support these water dependent buffalo - so the disease is eliminated for the great desert lions allowing them to live a healthy life providing game is plentiful. Here, travelling on a sand road with no other vehicle sited for hours we were ambushed by 4 sub adult males out hunting in daylight - a sure sign of hunger. Initial hunting instinct turned to inquisitiveness as they tried to fathom out if we and our van were edible.
Coming remarkably close this was an incredible one off and moving experience meeting the wildest of animals where they are king. Maureen advised the lead animal was staring "deep into my soul" as I exchanged looks and captured images. Light was excellent with brilliant blue cloudless sky.

Satara Camp in Kruger Park South Africa is one of the biggest and busiest for tourist activity. Despite this the animal siting’s can be incredible. We are grateful to the Afrikaans gentleman who flagged us down advising of the three big cats resting at a small waterhole a half mile up a dirt road. On arrival two of the three were barely visible, sleeping in the grasses, but this old bruiser was up and slowly drinking. Though magnificent, he is not in good shape and clearly at the latter end of his area dominance, with a full belly (but prominent backbone) he is recently well fed - but the scars on face and fore leg showing he has had to fight his peers for his supper. A fantastic siting! Sky was overcast but still producing bright light.

A separate frame from the images taken as described above, for this shot Bruce was able to move our vehicle a half cars length to the (R) and similar distance closer within a very confined area, long zoom resting on bean bag did the rest. Interestingly the animal did not drink from the fresh water at the maintained water hole, but rather the runoff water puddled below. Sky was overcast but still producing bright light.

We heard nothing through the night - no sound of a great hunt - no gunshots, but in the morning the body of a large elephant lay on its side some hundred yards off the main road close to Satara, Kruger Park. Its tusks already gone was this the work of poachers or had the Park Rangers already cleared the area?
With no large predators in site could it be a natural death death or a suspicious end? Whatever the cause the opportunistic scavengers of the area were delighted to start the macabre clean up, with vultures being in the ascendancy this black backed jackal had to fight his way in, and with tail wagging and lips bared aggressively defend his spot on the dinner table. Sky was overcast but at the same time producing some glare through the cloud.

Touring out of Punda Maria Camp in Kruger Park we had stopped at the Pafuri Wilderness Safari Lodge on the banks of the Limpopo River, as my wife stood reading one of the information boards she heard a loud "twang" as this unfortunate flying insect crashed into the Golden Orb Spiders web. With the smaller male spider looking on from a safe distance the female took only a few moments to incapacitate and wrap up her prey. The spiders will often hang their catches in strings - it is thought as a warning to birds and bats to prevent them flying through and damaging their huge (up to 6 ft across) webs - this does not stop male Water Buck whose horns we regularly saw adorned with remains of webs. The strings of the webs (which are individually stronger the Kevlar) have been investigated as an alternative source of material for bullet proof vests.
Weather was overcast - light poor due to canopy of bush and Fever and Mopane trees.

Sanibel Island, Florida, USA: While tourists on this wonderfully laid back Island trawled the beach for shells adopting the Sanibel Stoop posture, above them these wonderful Ospreys fly and hunt largely unnoticed.
The breeding pair had just reacquainted themselves while this fine young male
stood out as a 3rd bird with no room on the nest: Probably one of last year’s successful hatchlings this would be his first year returning from Canada to the Floridian land of his birth. To get the image I had to wade through chest high shrub tree's and grasses off the beach and wait for one of the birds to roost with a fish, meanwhile squeaks and rustling in the grass around me kept me on my toe's as unseen animals scavenged the many fish carcasses dropped by the well-fed birds.

Taken in the Birders Paradis at J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Centre on Sanibel Island, Florida, USA: This beautiful female Anhinga with buff coloured neck sits with wings outstretched drying in the sun. Unfortunately conflict between man and bird can be seen with a section of nylon fishing line hanging from the beak, the bird spears fish underwater with this strong pointed bill but in this instance it looks like a fishermans catch has been taken along with the hook and line. We were able to contact the Emergency help line of the Education Centre for Ranger Support advising of the birds predicament and location opposite a mile marker.

Here the De-aerator column a large structure heavily protected inside and out with passive fire protection has been prepared by chiselling off the PFP then Oxy-propane cut using 4ft lance; heat building up on the metal through lack of heat transfer from PFP creating sparks
and flame, a natural "face" in the flames becoming visible forward of the Burners visor. Camera hand held at 1/80th second to capture sparks against the dark background while reducing camera shake.

Topside destruct of an Offshore Oil Rig undergoing first phase of refit. Here one of the old Production Separators is in the last stage of destruction by burning into sections for removal by vessels cranes. With so much hot work ongoing and use of Oxy-Propane gasses the work of the fire-watcher is essential; this individual is patrolling his area, keeping an eye on potential for ignition, keeping the area clear of people and equipment while assisting the burner with hose management and general safety.
Camera hand held at slowest speed possible to capture both firewatcher movement and that of the arcing sparks while retaining detail in the rest of the image.

Structure is a private wooden jetty at the fantastic Ghost Mountain Inn, jutting into the waters created by the Jozini Dam in Mkuze Northern KwaZulu. With a surface of approximately 13,500 hectares this is one of South Africa’s largest dams, providing excellent water safari opportunities to see elephant and hippo alongside numerous bird species.
Short exposure time used to prevent camera shake from the warm breeze moving from (R) to (L) and visibly bending the rushes. Most certainly "A Lakeside idyll."

Cape Town retains some heavy industry even close to its tourist orientated Victoria and Albert Waterfront area. With shipping offices and chandlers nearby many small vessels and oil industry vessels undergo maintenance alongside picturesque fishing boats.
Great to see "proper" jobs being sensitively conducted so close to the main tourist area’s busy restaurants and bars.
I was attracted to this scene by the late afternoon sun creating silhouettes and shadows within the pools of water and water jet spray. I captured the image on a small compact camera by leaning into the dry-dock, down a few access stairs while workers used their High Pressure lances to scrub the ships bottom in preparation for painting.
